Perception is the process by which people select, organize, interpret, and respond to information from the world around them.
There are five basic elements in the perceptual process which occur in the following order:
(1) observation (of environmental stimuli);
(2) perceptual selection;
(3) perceptual organization;
(4) interpretation; and finally
(5) response.
Perception is the psychological process whereby people select information from the environment and organize it to make sense of their world.
Environmental stimuli are observed, selected, organized, interpreted, and responded to as a result of the perceptual process.
Understanding the two major components of this process—selection and organization—is particularly important.
